What is Redemption?
Redemption is a fan-run, not-for-profit convention for fans of science fiction and fantasy – in any form. The idea of the Redemption conventions is to have a fun relaxing weekend where everyone joins in. There are talks, videos, games, workshops, discos, a cabaret and fancy dress and anything else we can think of! Plus an auction, a dealers room, art show, filking, sitting around the bar having a good time, parties and more! Oh, and yes, there are guests… but since they are encouraged to join in all the fun activities with everyone else, it is as likely that you’ll be on stage and they’ll be in the audience as it is the other way around!
What happened to all the other questions?
Some information that used to be provided on this page can now be found under the relevant subjects in the site menu.
If you have any questions that aren’t answered here, please get in touch with us and ask them!
Don’t these normally happen in February?
They used to. Redemption ’19 moved to January due to hotel availability, but January didn’t work for some people. The August date enables us to hold the event during school holidays, and meant that we could announce the venue before the end of Redemption ’19.
Don’t these normally happen in odd-numbered years?
They used to. But with the move to August, that would have left us with a two-and-a-half-year gap between Redemptions, and we didn’t want to make everyone wait that long!
The current plan is to hold Redemption conventions in even-numbered years from 2020 onwards.
28th-31st? Is Redemption a four-day convention now?
It will be business as usual for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with the programme kicking off around Friday lunchtime, and the closing ceremony taking place on Sunday afternoon/evening.
We’ve added Monday as a bonus day for those who prefer to avoid Bank Holiday travel, or just want to spend another day away from the real world. Exact details have yet to be confirmed, but we hope to offer limited programming and/or an excursion to one or more of Sheffield’s fine attractions.
How do I book a hotel room?
For Redemption ’20, attendees will be responsible for booking their own accommodation directly with the hotel. Bookings should open in October 2019, when we will release the convention hotel booking code to members.
The hotel booking section in the online membership form is purely for our information, and will not secure you a room!
Please see the hotel page for more details.
What happens if I can’t get the time off/something urgent comes up?
If you’ve booked for Redemption and then find that you can’t attend, you can obtain a refund of your convention membership fee (less an administration charge of £10), on request, at any time up to the end of June 2020. Refunds after that time will be considered only in exceptional circumstances. However, you can sell on your membership to someone else at any time up to the start of the convention. Just write to our membership address and give your details (so we know who is selling the membership) and the details of who is buying it. Please note that it is not possible to have your membership ‘rolled over’ to the next Redemption.
